While the Red October may not have been an actual submarine, the Russian Typhoon class is based on the certain is. Makes out, Hollywood does not need to embellish many details for the movie Typhoons really can sneak up on you.
Typhoon is a class of nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarines of the USSR developed and deployed throughout the 1980s. The fleet of six submarines were built at Severodvinsk Shipyard on the White Sea.
The largest submarines ever built, they measure 175 meters in length with a submerged displacement of 48,000 tonnes. The Typhoon class is capable of staying submerged for up to three months at a time.
The large ships are using a five-layer, the outermost pressurized Hull, which will range in sound dampening plates, allowing the ship to dive to a maximum depth of 400 meters. The style of the five-layer also allows for an overall wider design than a conventional submarine. This will help to create the necessary living space for the crew of 160 sailors Typhoon, and it provides additional protection against Hull breaches.
A Typhoon class sub is powered by two OK-650 pressurized-water nuclear reactors, each one provides an excess of 250,000 HP. This allows the subs to reach a top speed of 22 knots on the surface and 27 knots when submerged.
The Typhoon is designed to compete with America Ohio class subs, which is capable of carrying up to 192 100-kiloton nuclear warheads. Typhoons conducted a major cache of 20 RSM-52 SLBMs, each containing up to 10 MIRV warheads. These missiles are designed so that a Russian sub able to launch them safely and discreetly from under the surface of the ocean. The missiles are capable of breaking through the Arctic ice floes during the launch as well.
