Star Wars fans, prepare to geek out. The LEGO Group and LucasFilms are showing off the world’s largest LEGO model in New York City’s Times Square today: A 1:1 replica of an X-Wing Starfighter.
The enormous LEGO model is 11 feet tall, 43 feet long and has a wingspan measuring 44 feet. It contains a whopping 5,335,200 LEGO bricks. An international team that included engineers and mechanics spent more than a year planning, designing, and then constructing the X-Wing so it would be sturdy enough for transport from LEGO’s Model Shop in the Czech Republic. Construction alone took 32 builders about four months.
How big is this thing? So big that the LEGO team had to make sure the X-Wing model would be safe for Times Square given the Subway below. According to the LEGO Group, the model has a brick and steel infrastructure. Although I’d like to think they made the starfighter because they heard about a Death Star made from LEGOs, it’s really because there’s a new LEGO Star Wars cartoon show about Yoda premiering next week.
After three days on display in New York, the X-Wing will be transported in sections to LEGOLand in California, where it will be reassembled and shown through the end of the year. If you happen to find yourself at the toy store holding a box containing the LEGO Star Wars set #9493, just think — the freestanding model is 42 times that size.
