In a bid to dwarf all of the most impressive statues of the world , India has broken ground on what will be the world's highest statue of 182 meters ( 600 feet ) . The planned Statue of Unity will be a tribute to Sardar Patel , the first home minister India when they achieved independence . It was erected in the state of Gujarat . The towering statue would be twice the height of the Statue of Liberty and four times the height of Christ the Savior in Rio de Janeiro .
Narendra Modi opposition leader was behind the work , which is something of a pet project for him . It is built out of metal . The calls were even made with local farmers to provide scrap metal for construction .
" People come to see the Taj Mahal, flock to America for the Statue of Liberty and Eiffel Tower for France . Now people from all over the world come here to see this wonder , " said Modi AFP.com .
The foundation for the statue was put down and the construction is worth approximately 25000000000 Rupees ( about $ 300,000,000) .
