The Komondor

The Komondor is undoubtedly one of the oldest and most unique-looking dog breed in the world. It was mentioned for the first time in the Code of Hammurabi (a set of laws that the Babylonian king Hammurabi created around 1750 BC). However, the Komondor is nowadays considered to be the traditional dog of Hungary.

The first thing you notice about these dogs is their resemblance to giant mops : in fact , their 2000 Cord jacket alone weighs around 15 pounds ( 30 kilograms ) and it is approximately three feet in height (a bit over 90 centimeters ) . The Komondor 's cords develop during its first two years of life and their length increases with time , while growing the coat . Thankfully , the dog does not need brushing , but you do not have to separate the cords , which can take a while , as they tend to get tangled . If the dog's natural appearance is maintained , which means corded coat letting it grow long , able to perceive its noticeably rectangular shape . The adorable mops leaving animals were used as guard dogs , and their corded coat acts as camouflage they are especially useful for guarding sheep . The Komondor breed is believed to have become so efficient at this task that nearly wiped out all of Hungary 's population of wolves .

As adorable as it may seem , having a Komondor for a pet is not as easy as it might seem : First of all, it needs a lot of space for daily exercise , so you can live in the countryside this fits best . Second , although this race has not been used for guarding purposes for quite some time now , and actually preferred as a pet by most families , keep in mind that it still has a strong protective instincts , so it may not be so friendly to strangers . Finally and most importantly , the Komondorok ( plural for Hungarian Komondor ) are very independent , self-willed dog , so you have to train them professionally from an early age . The one thing you do not have to worry about is excessive shedding . Contrary to what most people think , shedding is minimal with this generation once its thick cords are fully formed .
