Kathryn Bolkovac is an American police officer who was hired out by DynCorp, a British security firm, and posted in the Balkans to crack down on women being trafficked for sex.
Her investigation revealed that the very United Nations peacekeepers and Nato officers that had been sent to the area to restore peace and order after the war were the very ones fueling the sex trafficking.
They were bringing in girls from eastern Europe, like Ukraine and Romania, with the promise of waitressing jobs, taking their passports, and giving them to brothels and clubs for sex trafficking. The UN peacekeepers and Nato officers were helping transport the girls, falsifying documents, alerting owners of raids, and of being repeat customers using the women for sex against their will.
When Bolkovac alerted her superiors of her findings she was reassigned and then sacked for “falsifying time sheets,” but they were trying to rid themselves of her due to her findings. The company turned a deaf ear to what she found. She sued the company for what they did. A movie starring Rachel Weisz as Bolkovac, "The Whistleblower," was released in 2010 shedding light on the story.
