But the largest and highest volcano in the solar system is Olympus Mons (extinct volcano) the planet Mars !!!
Olympus Mons is 24 km (78,000 ft.) On top of the surrounding plain and assume that depression is a 2-3 kilometer, giving a total height of 26-27 kilometers. Its base is more than 550 km in diameter and rimmed by a cliff 6 km (20,000 ft) high. It features a caldera of 85 km (53 miles) long, 60 km (37 miles) wide, and up to 3 km (1.8 miles) deep with six overlapping holes or craters created by different volcanic events. The sizes are only estimates calculated from the analysis of the images of the spacecraft Mariner 9 in 1971 Olympus Mons is a Latin name, which means Mount Olympus. It is three times as tall as Mount Everest. It is approximately the size of the American state Arizona. It is a shield volcano, very similar to the ones in Hawaii, formed by layers of lava over the years.
Olympus Mons is formed in the same way as Hawaii, by an eruption of magma from a hot spot below the surface. Because the layers of lava are formed one on top of another from a hot spot for a long time, it is believed that there are no tectonic plates on Mars to dislocate the mountain and then letting it grow bigger and bigger with the years. Olympus Mons is located in the Tharsis Montes region of Mars (Tharsis Montes is a large swelling on the Martian surface using a set of three volcanoes in the Tharsis region of Mars. It is a plateau region and the largest volcano on Mars). Two craters on Olympus Mons has been named the IAU as Karzok crater with 15.6 km wide and Pangboche crater with 10.4 km wide. The volcano is tall enough to reach a height above the dust storms that often appear on Mars.
The Olympus Mons volcano is surrounded by a region called Olympus Mons aureole (circles of light). This place is gigantic ridges and blocks extending up to 1,000 km (600 miles) from the summit. It shows evidence of development and resurfacing connected with Glacial activity. But this aureole is many a troubled time with the Escarpment. Explain some of the theories that Escarpment was formed by landslides, and the aureole consists of material got deposited from the land slide.
Studies indicate that Olympus Mons first erupted between one and two billion years before. But during the last active volcano still remains the question. Appears very fresh some lava slopes of the volcano anyway. Astronomers believe these and other scientists can it recently active until a million years before.
IN PHOTO, HIGHEST mountain shown is the Mount Olympus Mons, in the middle of the mountain IS THE ILE DE Hawaii, THE BLUE MOUNTAIN IS Mount Everest (shows pictures comparing the highest mountain)
